The Italy defender received a cold reception from the San Siro crowd as a response to his move back to Juventus from AC Milan
Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci has called fans at San Siro who booed him in a match against Portugal on Saturday “idiots.”
Bonucci spent the 2017-18 season at Milan after a high-profile move from Serie A champions Juventus that summer.
However Bonucci ended up back at Juventus after just one season, rejoining the Old Lady this past summer in a swap deal for Mattia Caldara, and has since spoken of his happiness to be back in Turin.
Lining up in the backline with his Juventus partner Giorgio Chiellini for Italy against Portugal, however, saw Bonucci play in front of a crowd that featured many Milan supporters.
The result was heavy boos every time he touched the ball.
Bonucci responded forcefully after the match, declaring the fans who booed him “idiots” and saying only the opinions of his coach and team-mates are important.
“There are always idiots out there,” Bonucci told Rai Sport. “I have the confidence of my teammates and the coach, so that’s all that matters.”
Italy needed a victory against Portugal in the League A, Group 3 clash in order to have a chance at making the semi-finals of the Nations League, but could only muster a scoreless draw.
Bonucci thought he and his team-mates gave it their all and played a strong first half, though second half adjustments by Portugal choked off the game.
“We tried our best, with a great first half performance and two or three chances that could’ve allowed us to break through,” Bonucci said.
“After the break, Portugal changed a few things tactically and managed to block off our creative centres. Bernardo Silva closed up on Marco Verratti and Jorginho, but we still managed to pass our way towards goal and just need to be more determined in attack.”
