The new Gunners boss has suggested that late window movement at Emirates Stadium is likely to be focused on exits rather than additions
Unai Emery has suggested that Arsenal’s recruitment business is done, with departures more likely than arrivals before Thursday’s deadline.
The Gunners were unable to provide their new boss with a transfer war chest this summer, meaning that only minor tweaking has been made to ranks inherited from Arsene Wenger.
Bernd Leno, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi have been acquired, but there has been no elaborate spending in north London.
Emery does not appear to be planning any late foray into the market prior to the window closing, with it possible that further exits could represent the only movement.
The Spaniard told reporters after overseeing a 2-0 friendly victory over Lazio in Stockholm: “My focus is on the first match and preparing, and not for the window and the possibility to sign another player.
“Maybe we need some players to leave because we have lots in the squad, but at the moment, my one focus is on our work.”
One area that Emery has been left light in of late is at left-back, with Sead Kolasinac suffering an untimely injury and Nacho Monreal returning from World Cup duty nursing a knock.
The Spaniard was unable to figure against Lazio and now faces a race against time to be ready for a season opener against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City on August 12.
“He arrived with one, not big injury. His knee has a little problem,” Emery said of the 32-year-old.
“He is training every day, but not with the squad. He is doing the work alone with the physio and running.
“We think maybe he can train with the squad on Tuesday, he can start with the team.
“We don’t want the injuries.
“We have players, one is Nacho but he arrived later with the World Cup and also with a small injury. I think it is difficult [for him] to arrive for the match against Manchester City. For that we are trying Ainsley [Maitland-Niles], he played in that position.
“He works to do this position the best possible way. My confidence in the player is great. If he is ready to play, Nacho is perfect but if not, we can have this chance with Ainsley. My confidence in all players is great.”
